A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

At the beginning of the 21st century, with the ecological crisis effectuating a sobering experience for mankind, we are challenged to define and encourage a new approach. Current mass species extinction rates are continuing unabated. Deforestation has not only removed habitats, but also forest ecosystem services that help regulate climate and absorb carbon dioxide. Furthermore, plastics in the ocean has been a major factor in its acidification increase, leading to elevated levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide, imperiling the survival of corals, and endangering entire ocean ecosystems.

As is evidenced by the evolution of eco-efficiency from theory to practice, environmental awareness is growing day by day, and has led to the belief that environmental problems are interconnected and multidimensional, and cannot be dealt with in separate, well-defined boxes. Instead, this principle must be achieved through popular participation, communication, dialogue, scientific cooperation, and through open minds that understand the diverse universe of mankind to which culture is a matrix of infinite possibilities.

Mehri Madarshahi, President, Melody for Dialogue among Civilizations Association

The Melody for Dialogue among Civilizations Association, for more than a decade since its inception, has devoted its efforts to create this important bridge across the global community. We realize that the need for a new approach – as a bridge to the sustainable development goals (SDGs), contributing to a more harmonious world and durable peace – is of absolute importance. As is evidenced by its major programs, forums, concerts, and all other forms of advocacy, Melody has been successful in introducing music as an intangible aspect of cultural heritage at UNESCO. The Convention on Intangible Cultural Heritage included music as an important cultural element in its lists. Melody was bestowed the 2012 Aspen Diplomacy Award.

The present Choral Symphony composed and conducted by Maestro Wang Ning is the latest in our series of programs reflecting on environmental issues. This concert is the ultimate warning to all of us about the fate of our blue planet. This composer urges us all to ACT and ACT NOW since we have already crossed the RED Line.

I hope our cry for help and for the survival of our planet could be heard by all of you through dialogue with music.
